Please tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Jorrie and my blog is Close to Classy. I’m a registered nurse, and I work specifically with homeless veterans and their families. When I’m not at work I love spending time with my family. My husband and I have been married almost nine years, and we have a five-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son. We are an active family that enjoys spending time outdoors, especially at the lake!
What’s one type of flooring you use in your children’s room and why?
My house is mostly hardwood flooring, and we carried that into the kids’ rooms as well. I love that it’s so durable, and because I love rustic furnishings, I think it only gets prettier with age. We also have rugs in the kids’ rooms to add a little comfort and coziness when they are playing on the floor.
Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
I started Close to Classy because writing is very therapeutic for me, and parenting leaves you with a lot of questions and “Oh my gosh, what am I doing?!” moments. There are times I don’t truly know how I feel about something until I write about it. I love that writing allows me to really process my feelings. I feel like we can all learn from each other, whether that be in parenting or otherwise, so a parenting blog seemed like a perfect place to merge my interests. It’s an added bonus that I get to interact with tons of other parents going through the same crazy experiences that I am.
Do you follow any other blogs for inspiration? If so, which ones?
Yes!! I love to read, and have a lot of very talented friends in the industry. I enjoy reading the bigger parenting pages like Scary Mommy and Babble, but a few of my favorite personal blogs are The 21st Century SAHM, by Karen Johnson, and No Idea What I’m Doing: A Daddy Blog, by Clint Edwards.
Can you explain a recent project or post you’ve been working on?
Recently I have been working on a humor piece about potty training. I have written on the topic before, when I potty trained my daughter, but I’m back in the trenches with my son, and he has made sure to keep me on my toes. Kids are funny that way, no two are alike.
