Carpet options that can transition from indoor to the outdoors and vice versa have not been talked about as much as materials like marble tile, or even specific species of hardwood flooring. However, with so many benefits they have been increasing in popularity. Even outdoor carpeting options, more specifically rugs, have been transitioning for use indoors. Here’s an overview of the pros and cons from us here at Floor Coverings International of West Cleveland. Want to know more about indoor/ outdoor carpeting? Find out here.
Pros:
Durable
The materials for indoor/ outdoor rugs are meant to last. Since they are intended for outdoor use, where they would be subject to the elements in addition to other wear and tear, it should come as no surprise that these rugs are sure to endure even in your high-traffic areas. They will also last through all of the stains or messes that might occur.
Stylish options now available
Old, fake plastic grass options are being seen less frequently. In their place, they are now offered in materials that seem to fit for indoor use and have a variety of patterns. They can come in more subdued prints with a simple border, or more graphic and bold. With a variety of colors, they are easy to pair to any aesthetic you are seeking.
Easy maintenance
Since they are also meant for outdoor use, many rugs can be hosed down and then dried – they can be cleaned without having to call in a professional cleaner. Be sure to follow the cleaning recommendations from the manufacturers. The pile type in these rugs also factor in to the easy maintenance and care. Spills can easily be dealt with. This makes it ideal if you have children or pets in your home and are concerned about the mess.
Comfortable
Many customers ask if they feel scratchy and unpleasant. While this may have been the consensus a few years ago, many indoor/outdoor rugs are made to feel very pleasant underfoot. Sometimes they may have to be “broken-in”, but will feel even softer over time.
Cons:
Materials and VOCs
The main drawback with indoor/outdoor carpeting is that the majority are made using synthetic fibers that tend to have high Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Polypropylene (olefin) fibers are durable, yet tend to give a smell that some speculate may cause respiratory concerns.
However, some companies do use PET (recycled plastic) in their fibers which have no or minimal VOCs. For the best environmentally friendly products, be sure that the backing of the rug is also VOC free.
Indoor/Outdoor carpeting is great for households that are looking for low maintenance flooring that also add warmth. Be sure to keep the materials in mind if you have respiratory concerns.
